There’s so much to like about SWIMM’s new single, Speak Politely. This track makes such short work of sonic layering and stereo spreading, it manifests headphone euphoria.
Speak Politely possesses this innate feeling that you’re about to get lost in a wash of keyboard pads and lush guitar tones right from the intro; one minute in, and it’s easy to forget you’re listening to great songwriting and lyrics too. The vocal delivery is almost androgynous in nature and egotistical at times, but always honest and acquiescent in content. Lyrical gems such as “Come down to there's really nothing wrong with me. And the mystery of how a woman works, is just beyond me” run throughout the track’s verses.
A grandiose chorus sums up, “I can’t afford you to stay, I can’t afford you to go away”. While the writer waxes post-relationship dilemmas, the listener is treated to soulful brass band horn lines (minus screeching trumpets, reviewer points awarded), syncopated drumming, and a perfectly-placed dry acoustic guitar which expertly moves Speak Politely through all its BritPop splendor. SWIMM’s single is playlist worthy and for fans of The Charlatans, The Longpigs, et al.
