Canadian alt. pop songstress, Emily Vay’s new single, Dollhouse caught me off my game, it’s a pop song, but it’s dark and understated, it’s artsy and soulful. It’s everything I love about music, wrapped up in a pop format.
Vay manages to present a current-sounding single without using the usual cliché sounds and tones. No outlandish, overdriven guitars pumping up the choruses like it’s in line for the next superhero blockbuster movie release. No auto-tune, no screamo vocal acrobatics on the refrains; Vay navigates this track through its sections with interesting melodic prowess and lyrics, not brute and brawn. Eerie and a bit haunting, Vay’s vocal is believable and purposeful, emotional and beautiful. Ethereal bells, strings and understated delayed guitar licks are worth admission.
There’s always something interesting unfolding in the wings of this song, parts undiscovered, “under the eaves” sonic treats that will make this track a cherished part of your collection.
