So it's silly time again, when the so-called big publications curate their predictable end of year lists, with the same bands & artists appearing in every list. Probably paid by the labels. So what about the ones that aren't on labels? It's been a great year for underground music; I've discovered, shared & reviewed some seriously good music. With this in mind, here are my Top 10 tracks of 2017
10 Roads (Portishead Cover) - Rising Edge
If you cover a song, make it your own. Which is exactly what Rising Edge have done here. It’s almost impossible to make a dark song darker, but someone they've pulled it off, the vocals add a gritty depth.
9 Can U Feel It - Liam Boyle & Miranda Foxx
Every now and then you hear an artist and think, why aren't they bigger? This duo has created some amazing music this year. Miranda Foxx's gorgeously original voice is without doubt the most seductive voice on the indie scene right now.
8 Soft Lights - Minnie Micros
Deliciously dark electro from East London’s voyeurs of darkness.
7 Radio Goodbye - Betapsi
Creative, bonkers & brilliantly talented. Italian producer and artist Betapsi hit the scene with an army of puppets carrying machine guns. Haunting, ethereal & utterly mesmerising.
6. River Flood - Liam Boyle & Miranda Foxx
When I first heard this, I honestly thought I discovered the new Breeders. This track oozes cool, you can totally hear it on Tarantino or Twin Peaks film score. I could listen to Foxx's voice all day long; the guitars are pretty dam brilliant too. Quite simply the coolest track of 2017.
5 Ceiling Demons - The Rose
Deep, dark and unbelievably powerful. Performed with real pain and emotion.
4 Jaayns - Lost
Another artist who deserves a bigger stage. A spellbinding mix of emotions and immaculate production.
3 Ladies - Ortense Blue
A haunting fairy-tale, which takes you to a magical unknown land. A stunning piece of music.
2 Anabolic - P Blasio
A euphoric masterpiece. Impossible to hear without wishing you were in a dance club. Hands down, hand in the air, the best dance track of 2017.
1 Machine - Liam Boyle Miranda Foxx
All of the tracks in this top 10 have one in common, apart from being utterly brilliant; they all stopped me in my tracks, and none more so than Machine. Another belting anthem from the Boyle & Foxx duo. A brilliant mix of electronics and guitars with the best voice on the underground scene right now. Machine is from the future; it’s a future I want to be part of. Not just my track of the year, but one of all time favourites.
