Not a Side Project's "Insight Output" is an amped-up instrumental track which starts like the rumbling of an oncoming freight train before it plunges into a heavy forward groove that quickly becomes a crazed ride that you really want to go on. Underneath the intense textures of the mix - which is thick in places yet with lots of skilled production yet has excellent separation and clarity everywhere - the riffs in certain sections have an almost surf-like form - Boom! New genre - and they own it here - even if it is cleverly hiding in the sound - It's kind of like.... a secretly SURF-METAL track?... and it shows that this group has a strong talent for weaving unique ideas together into their music.
Even though the piece tears into your brain like a hammer, the track also has a very refined kind of energy that shows musical intelligence. Driving the main "intro" sections is a pulsing synthesised track in among the guitars. The main verse-like parts show a beautiful breadth of production, combining industrial sounding guitar rhythms with intriguing synthesised elements, which are not at all out of place, they really coexist with the guitars\drums\bass to lift out the musical ideas, and highlight them, or back them up with force and strong melodic leanings. Some of the breaks are also very "big" sounding and textured with layers of interesting sounds.
This track will wake you up and push you forward through the world. It makes you want to find out what else this band are up to! Turn it up, go forth, and rock harder and smarter!
