It weeps with such emotion and allows one to relate to the humanity of this song. Dieter van der Westen’s vocal performance is sung immaculately and has a sedating tone. He does a great job portraying his life experiences through “Old Oak Tree” but still leaves room for the listeners to create his or her own perspective of what the song is about (just like a true artist should).
Near the house where I grew up there was a forest where an old oak tree stood. I was sixteen, the youngest of four brothers and the only one who still lived at home. Then my father became sick, manic-depressive. It was a tough period with tension, stress and situations that I had never experienced before. In order to cope with the stress and strain I went out of the house at night into the forest. I sat down under the old oak tree where I could let my emotions g and I could come to rest and get myself together again.
Not only does the lyrical and musical content of “Old Oak Tree” impress us but also so does the audio. This recording has perfect balance. The instrumentation is equalised to make a nice little “hole” for the vocal to sit in. This allows for a blend that is easy on the ears while making the vocals “pop”.
